What Is Normal Blood Sugar?

  • HbA1c (the amount of blood sugar attached to a hemoglobin): The American Diabetes Association recommends less than 7.0%

What is normal blood sugar levels for a person without diabetes?

  • Fasting normal blood sugar: 70–99 milligrams per deciliter
  • Normal blood sugar 2 hours after meals: Less than 140 milligrams per deciliter
  • HbA1c (the amount of blood sugar attached to a hemoglobin): Less than 5.7%

Why is it bad to have high blood sugar levels?

When your blood sugar is too high, your pancreas works hard to create insulin for your body. When your insulin levels are too high, this can cause permanent damage to your pancreas.
