There’s a lot to know when enrolling in Medicare coverage, and we understand the process can be confusing and overwhelming. Here we answer common questions about Medicare Advantage plan coverage and potential benefits to help you choose the right option for you.

What is Medicare Advantage?

Also known as Part C, Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies and include Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) coverage. These types of plans can also include additional benefits* such as lower copays, prescription drug coverage, fitness programs and no deductibles. Check with the plan before you enroll to see what benefits it offers, if you might qualify, and if there are any limitations for you to consider.

Does Medicare Advantage replace Medicare?

No. Under a Medicare Advantage plan, you receive Medicare Part A and Part B, as well as the rights and protection of original Medicare. Some Medicare Advantage plans can also include drug coverage (Part D).

Are all Medicare Advantage plans the same?

No. Plans differ when it comes to out-of-pocket costs, which doctors are in-network, benefits* and more. Learn more about what Medicare Advantage Plans cover.

Does Medicare Advantage cover screenings and preventive care?

Yes. A Medicare Advantage plan focuses on preventing disease and keeping you healthy with preventive care. Ochsner shares this commitment to caring for you. We offer a wide range of primary medical care and health screenings across our Ochsner locations.

Will my plan cover me when I travel?

Medicare Advantage plans can provide coverage when traveling overseas to fill the gap in coverage by original Medicare. In most cases, original Medicare only covers you when traveling within the United States and its territories.

What are the costs associated with Medicare Advantage plans?

There are several factors that impact what you pay out-of-pocket in a Medicare Advantage plan. Some plans only cover services from providers inside their network and dedicated services area. Learn from medicare.gov about these factors and how to get cost details.

When can I enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan?

The initial Medicare enrollment period lasts seven months. You can sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan three months before you turn 65, the month of your 65th birthday and for three months after you turn 65. The open enrollment period is from October 15 – December 7 each year, where you can join, switch or drop a plan, and your coverage will begin on January 1 if you get your request in by December 7.
