How to Choose an LGBTQ+ Friendly Healthcare Facility?

Historically, members of the LGBTQ+ community have been underserved, making finding the right healthcare difficult. Ochsner is uniquely qualified to provide compassionate, individualized care and services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning (LGBTQ+) patients.

Finding the right healthcare tailored to your needs starts with selecting a provider. Ochsner has the region’s largest team of LGBTQ+ experienced providers, and our facilities have been recognized as “Top Performers” in caring for LGBTQ+ patients by the Human Rights Campaign’s Healthcare Equality Index.

The Healthcare Equality Index evaluates healthcare facilities for their dedication to the equitable treatment and inclusion of their LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees. What’s more, our staff receives specialized training in LGBTQ+ patient-centered care.

Brandy Panunti, MD, says that many factors go into selecting the right provider. “I think it’s so important to find a provider that you can work with, someone that sees you, someone that hears you and that values this relationship.” Dr. Panunti said.

Apart from healthcare needs, Ochsner has a multi-disciplinary gender affirmation clinic that serves people. Clifton Mixon, PhD, is a psychologist in the clinic and helps patients along their transition journey.

“In this clinic, I work with the pediatric endocrinologist to really understand the whole patient and family system. I try to help facilitate their decision around different steps around social transition and when they are ready for medical transition as well as make sure they have continuity of care till adulthood.” Dr. Mixon said.
