Pregnancy is a time of anticipation and joy, but it also comes with new challenges and health concerns—especially when it comes to monitoring maternal and fetal well-being. For Quanee A., a mother who had already experienced two healthy births and a miscarriage, staying connected to her healthcare team during her subsequent pregnancy was a priority. That’s where Ochsner’s Connected MOM program became a life-changing solution.

Connected MOM, or Connected Maternity Online Monitoring, is an innovative digital program by Ochsner Health designed to empower expectant mothers with remote monitoring tools, enabling proactive and personalized prenatal care. For Quanee, this program provided not just convenience, but also life-saving intervention when she developed preeclampsia.

What is Connected MOM?

Connected MOM is part of Ochsner’s efforts to make healthcare better for expectant mothers using smart technology. The program helps monitor blood pressure, an important pregnancy vital sign, without needing frequent visits to the doctor.

Here’s how it works:

  • Wireless Blood Pressure Monitoring: Moms-to-be get a wireless blood pressure cuff to check their blood pressure at home and send daily readings.
  • Real-Time Alerts: Doctors keep track of these readings and can spot issues like high blood pressure or preeclampsia earlier than regular check-ups might.
  • Easy Communication: Expectant mothers stay connected to their Ochsner OB-GYN team, so they can get help quickly if needed.

This program makes prenatal care more convenient and helps keep moms and babies healthier.

Quanee’s Journey with Connected MOM

After losing a pregnancy before conceiving her youngest child, Quanee wanted to make sure her third pregnancy was handled with extra care. To feel more secure and stay on top of her health, she joined the Connected MOM program, which became a key part of her prenatal care.

Throughout her pregnancy, Quanee used a wireless blood pressure cuff to check her readings every day, sending the results to her Ochsner care team. At first, everything seemed normal, which gave her peace of mind as the weeks passed.

But one day, the device detected dangerously high blood pressure, which is something she wouldn’t have noticed without the advanced monitoring. Her OB/GYN team immediately told her to go to the hospital.

At 37 weeks, Quanee was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a serious condition that can be life-threatening for both mom and baby if not treated. Thanks to catching it early, her doctors were able to induce labor, and she safely delivered her baby girl.

“Connected MOM gave me that sigh of relief, so I could feel confident that everything was OK,” Quanee says. The program’s early detection and quick action helped protect both her and her baby.

Connected MOM ultimately ensured a safe delivery for her baby girl. "If there’s any triggers, anything that my doctors need to be notified of, it’s done immediately,” says Quanee. “I think that’s very important because nobody wants to play with the life of their child.”
