Developmental Milestones: Birth – 6 Months

Watching your baby grow is one of the most exciting parts of parenthood! By the ages listed below, your baby is likely doing some of the following.

These milestones are based on general guidelines and all infants develop at a slightly different pace. If you have any concerns about your child's development, please talk to your pediatrician.

Up to 1 Month

  • Smiling for no apparent reason
  • Making eye contact, especially during feeding
  • Making random sounds
  • Trying to lift his or her head
  • Wiggling and squirming
  • Becoming startled when hearing a loud noise

Two Months

  • Smiling on purpose, such as in response to another person
  • Batting and swiping at nearby objects
  • Following you with his or her eyes as you move around the room
  • Beginning to lift or control his or her head

Four Months

  • Holding up his or her head
  • Reaching for and grabbing at nearby items
  • Squealing and laughing
  • Rolling to one side
  • Acting like he or she hears and sees you
  • Sucking on his or her hands and drooling

Six Months

  • Grabbing his or her feet and sucking toes
  • Putting some weight on his or her legs
  • Rolling over
  • Sitting up for a few seconds at a time, when placed in a sitting position
  • Babbling and laughing in response to words or noises made by others
  • Also, at six months some babies start to get teeth.
