9 Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day At Home

Pinterest Logo

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching, and you might be wondering how to celebrate this year. While vaccines are steadily being doled out, it is important to continue taking precautions against COVID-19. If you plan on celebrating away from crowds this year, you can still make this day special from home. After all, moms deserve an unforgettable and relaxing day now more than ever. Here are some tips to show the mom in your life that you care.

1. Breakfast in Bed

This timeless gift is one that your mother or spouse will love and appreciate. On this special Sunday, let her sleep in and surprise her with a spread of her favorite breakfast foods. If you have children, get them involved in the cooking process. Not only is this a sly way to teach some cooking skills but it helps your children feel included in the gift-giving process. Try this great recipe for Strawberry Shortcake English Scones.

2. Send Flowers

Sending flowers is a great way to brighten up your mom’s day. She will be happy every time she looks at them, whether you order a bouquet or hand pick wildflowers. This is also a great gift for those moms we can’t visit right now. Bonus points if you send her an edible arrangement! Not only will she be surprised, but she will enjoy eating the fresh fruit or chocolate-covered strawberries.

3. Recreate Her Favorite Meal

Instead of going out to eat this year, look up your mother’s favorite dish from her favorite restaurant. If your mom enjoys paella and sangria, learn how to make it. You will be surprised at the number of copycat recipes for your favorite meals on the internet. If your cooking skills aren’t great, support your local restaurant by making a to-go order. Take the meal home and plate it nicely as if you were at a restaurant. Just make sure to order ahead of time!

4. Plan an At-Home Spa Day

You might not be able to book a massage at your mom’s favorite spa, but you can still give her the royal treatment! Order a couple of supplies such as sheet masks, nail polishes, foot spa, hand creams, a cozy robe, fuzzy slippers or anything you think you think she will enjoy. Have everything ready for her including delicious treats like chocolate-covered strawberries, macarons and Champagne.

5. Gift Basket with Her Favorite Things

The secret to being a great gift-giver is taking the time to listen and observe. Think carefully about the things your mom or spouse enjoys, like her favorite candy bar, a gift card to her favorite store or her favorite perfume. You can even get the family involved by asking them to come up with one simple gift. Then put all the gifts in a nicely decorated basket tied with a ribbon in your mom’s favorite color.

6. Coupon Book

Now when we say give your mom a coupon book, we don’t mean the “Savvy Shopper” insert from your local paper. That will ruin her day and yours for that matter! Make a homemade coupon book she can use to redeem throughout the year. The coupons can say something like, “Coupon Good for Washing the Dishes” or “Coupon Good for Romantic Dinner.” If you don’t have time to make one, order one from Amazon.

7. Write Her a Letter

Times are tough, so if you can’t afford a fancy present this year, write a letter. It may feel that writing love letters are a dying art form, especially when it’s convenient to text in single letters and emojis. But trust us, she will love it, especially if you take the time to put your heart and soul into it. Being a mother is challenging enough without going through a pandemic. Make sure you acknowledge those challenges while expressing how grateful you are to have her in your life.

8. Turn your Backyard into an Oasis

Since you probably can’t get away this year, find ways to turn your backyard into your personal oasis. Buy some bistro lights and string them along your patio. Make a couple of easy finger foods, fruity drinks and put on a playlist with tropical music. If you are feeling extra fancy, buy a mini dip pool to make it feel like you are vacation.

9. Give Her a Break!

Whatever you choose to do this Mother’s Day, make sure you give your mom a break! On this day she is not allowed to lift a finger, change a dirty diaper or cook a meal! Do your best, along with the kids, to let her rest from her day to day tasks. Give her some much-needed alone time to catch on sleep, read a magazine, pamper herself or binge watch her favorite shows. Remember not to disturb her, unless you are asking if she wants butter on her popcorn. Pro tip: nine times out of 10, she wants the butter!
