4 Ways to Split Time Between Children

Juggling your time between kids can be stressful and often can come with a sense of guilt. Children have different levels of need, and that need can change from day to day. While it might seem complicated, it is possible to allocate equal time to each child with some effort. Here are four ways to make sure no one feels left out.

Evaluate each child’s needs

Your child’s age will play a significant factor in how much time and attention they need. Younger children require more attention and help to do things. Make sure when you are spending time with them that you are giving them your undivided attention. If your child is older, they might not require your help to do things for them, but it’s still important to provide them with the same attention, especially as their needs shift to emotional support and guidance in their pre-teen and teen years.

Take an interest in their interests

Kids will eventually gravitate toward a hobby or something of interest to them. It’s important that you not only take an interest in their hobbies but that you also nurture them. They might not be as exciting to you, or you might be tired of watching “Paw Patrol” again. But taking thirty minutes to an hour of your time to enjoy something with them will create positive memories. Treat them as the expert on that subject and ask them questions about what they have learned.

Make spending time with each child a part of your routine

This can be a tall order, especially when parents juggle work, couple and home life. There will be days when you are spread too thin and need to give yourself grace. Spending 10 minutes a day with each child can go a long way. That can be reading a bedtime story, going over the homework together or just asking them how their day went. Just being present to them each day is enough.

Schedule a recurring one on one time

Working in quick daily one-on-ones is great, but it is equally important to spend more extended periods of time with your children. Try to schedule a day or two a month with each child to do something that they like doing or some type of bonding activity. This will help create beautiful memories and give them a sense of stability. You can also consider a special trip near or far to celebrate a milestone birthday or event. Remember, your children just want your attention and love.
