Shelley Thibeau, PhD, RN

Director of the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist

Shelley Thibeau, PhD, RN, serves as the director of the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana in New Orleans, Louisiana, one of 30 active milk banks in the United States accredited by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. In three short years, the milk bank has grown to serve 75% of the NICU beds in Louisiana and over 110 outpatient families. As a NICU nurse, Shelley learned the importance of mothers’ own milk to preterm infant health and nutrition. She completed her PhD at Vanderbilt University in 2015, where she explored the milk immune components of healthy Black mothers of term infants. In her role as director, Shelley partners with community breastfeeding advocates to improve the equitable access to human milk for Louisiana infants. She is interested in continuing to explore the many properties of human milk that contribute to infant health and decrease health disparities among women and their infants.
