More than ever, technology is playing a vital role in how physicians manage their patient’s healthcare. The majority of medical technology over the years has taken many forms. The latest surgical devices, diagnostic tools or equipment needed to perform minimally invasive procedures have all led to better patient outcomes and an increased ability to heal.
What is relatively new in the array of medical innovation is the ability to proactively monitor a patient’s health to help avoid or manage chronic conditions. Now, physicians at Ochsner are utilizing wearable technology to record a patient’s vital signs, recommend specific health apps so that there is a clearer understanding of that patient’s health status and then coordinate the data received into the patient’s electronic health record. Our physicians can then use that health data to more quickly make adjustments to medications and the overall care plan. It’s a whole new concept that empowers patients so that they are more informed and fundamentally involved in their own healthcare.
