With football season officially here, fans will be filling up stadiums all across the country to cheer on their favorite teams. Aside from immersing themselves in the experience of joining in on the camaraderie and excitement, another part of the fun that football fans look forward to is digging in to some of their favorite stadium foods. But if you’re watching your calorie intake, are healthy menu items even an option? Or should you just plan ahead and bring that bag of baked kale chips or protein bar?
For Saints fans in New Orleans, eating healthier at home games at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome just got easier! Eat Fit NOLA, an initiative that started in 2012 with a mission to provide healthier options at area restaurants, recently teamed up with the Superdome’s Executive Chef Lenny Martinsen to develop designated Eat Fit NOLA-approved menu items that game-goers can enjoy. Fans in the Superdome’s general admission concourse sections will have the option of Eat Fit NOLA concessions, starting with the regular season home game on Sept. 20 when the Saints play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Eat Fit NOLA-approved concession items include fare such as hot spinach and artichoke dip, shredded chicken sliders, barbeque shrimp and grits, and even chocolate mousse. Other items include a chicken wrap, seared tuna salad, chicken kale salad and a Greek yogurt parfait.
To keep the menu items Eat Fit-NOLA approved, ingredients were thoughtfully selected. For example, the spinach dip is made with Greek yogurt; the chips are whole grain white corn tortillas; chicken sliders are on 100% whole grain mini buns with purple slaw tossed with apple cider vinaigrette; shrimp and grits are served over pureed cauliflower; and the chocolate mousse is high in protein (18 grams protein per serving) with zero added sugar.
The general admission and regular concourse Eat Fit NOLA concession stands will be located on the main concourse (section 147) and two others located at sections 217 and 261.
